Wooden moon bridge over a koi pond surrounded by fall foliage, Portland Japanese Garden, Oregon

Portland, Oregon

Forest Bathing

Shinrin-yoku — "forest bathing" — is a Japanese practice built around absorbing the atmosphere of a forest: not hiking through it, but slowing down enough to actually take in the sights, sounds, and smell of the place. This corner of the Portland Japanese Garden, with its moon bridge and koi pond at the peak of fall color, is about as close as a garden gets to that feeling on purpose.
