Portland, Oregon
Limbs Akimbo
The beautiful and famous laceleaf Japanese maple of the Portland Japanese Gardens. I was so excited to see this tree in person, but timing a trip to line up with peak autumn leaf color is not always easy. We did our best, but a storm the day before we arrived in Portland knocked off a lot of the leaves from this famous tree, and it's common practice for the gardeners to fully defoliate the trees once they are past peak. It was a disappointment at the time, but I setup and took the shot anyway (the side benefit was that no one else was lining up to get the shot). I wound up with a clear view of the tree's structural architecture—fully visible without its leaves.
