Inferno's Haunt
Along Olympic National Park, a wide beach disappeared into heavy fog, with enormous sea stacks looming out of the mist and a wall of dark pine forest pressing against the shore. The scene immediately brought me back to The Goonies—specifically the ending, when the pirate ship finally emerges from the cave and sails into the open sea.
The strangest part was how little I had to do to make the photograph feel that way. I processed it in monochrome, but I lost almost no color information because there was barely any to begin with. The fog had already drained the landscape of nearly everything except shape, tone, and atmosphere.
I called it Inferno's Haunt, imagining the legendary pirate ship emerging from somewhere beyond those sea stacks, still sailing through the mist.
