A bison in winter in Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park

True Grit

A bison in winter in Yellowstone National Park. They face into the weather rather than away from it, and push snow aside with their heads to reach the grass underneath. This shot was taken in late January, so the snow was quite deep and the bull had already endured a long winter at this point with little end in sight.

This photo underscores the inspiring tenacity and determination every animal in the Yellowstone ecosystem exhibits to fight and survive through the seasonal ups and downs.
