Trout Lake, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Serenity
We weren’t there for the lake. My brother-in-law and I had come up early to look for wolf activity and found tracks back beyond Trout Lake and nothing else, which is most of what looking for wolves gets you.
The lake on the way back was dead flat. End of July, everything still at its greenest, and a patch of grass on the far bank lit up lime against all that dark conifer.
I shot it at 150mm instead of going wide for two reasons. The first was that green — compressed, it reads as the subject rather than a detail you’d miss. The second was housekeeping: there was flotsam pooling on the surface just outside the left of the frame, where the lake drains, and a longer lens let me cut it rather than clone it out afterwards.
We had the place to ourselves. Passed a few people coming up as we were walking down.
