Large mountain goat ram on boulders, Greater Yellowstone, Wyoming

Greater Yellowstone, Wyoming

Patriarch

The wind was hard enough that you could watch him come apart. He was midway through dropping his winter coat and it was leaving him in real time — loose sheets of it lifting off and going down the slope, what remained hanging in a ragged undercut that looked less like an animal’s coat than like an actual garment he’d been wearing too long.

He’s the old billy from the group mentioned in Surveying the Valley — same hour, same rocks, five or six animals working the scree. The young male gave me eye contact. This one never really did. He stayed put and stayed watchful, and mostly looked at everything except us.

He was bigger and it isn’t a close call, though I never had them side by side to measure. It’s in the muzzle more than anywhere: boxier, more angular, a heavier nose. And the horns aren’t a judgement call at all.
