A brown bear sits chest-deep in the river at Katmai National Park, Alaska, head bowed over the salmon in its paws

Katmai National Park, Alaska

Bless This Food

The bear stood in the river with what remained of a salmon in front of him, his massive paws pressed together and his head turned slightly to the side. The expression was almost comically human. I couldn't help thinking of a Norman Rockwell scene—a child dutifully bowing his head at the dinner table while secretly peeking sideways to see if his parents had noticed what he was up to.

I loved the absurdity of the moment. For a few seconds, this enormous wild animal looked less like a predator and more like a mischievous child trying very hard to look innocent.
