Bald eagle in flight low over golden marsh grasses and open water, Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah

Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah

Freedom Belongs to the Bold

Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge sits at the northeast edge of the Great Salt Lake, where the river spreads out into marsh before it reaches the water. It's one of the major stopovers on the Pacific Flyway, and in late winter the bald eagles are still working the impoundments.

This was the first day of March, with the previous season's growth still standing dry and gold across the flats. Shot at 720mm and 1/4000 of a second to hold the wings clean, the eagle low and level over the reeds.
