Small waterfall and bridge in autumn, Cincinnati, Ohio

Sharon Woods, Sharonville, Ohio

All Good Things

Every leaf in that water is the reason for the name. This is the far end of the season, the last flush before the trees finish, and by the time I set up the creek was carrying the early color downstream rather than holding it overhead.

There’s a habit among landscape photographers of deciding nothing is worth shooting unless you’ve travelled a long way to it. I’ve never found that to hold up. With some effort and a little imagination there are frames worth keeping within half an hour of most people’s front doors, and this one is a stone bridge over a run of cascades that could pass for the English countryside if you didn’t know where you were standing.

Sharon Woods, in Sharonville, thirty-five minutes from where we were living in Newport at the time. I went out there as often as I could manage every autumn — decent trails, a few river crossings, and this.

Limestone Abyss is the other Ohio frame on this site, from a different stretch of that life — that one’s home ground, this one’s the Cincinnati years.
