Surf running up the sand on Kauai, Hawaii, under low sun

Kauai, Hawaii

Sunsurf

We had been socked in with gray skies and rain all day in Princeville, but my wife decided to take a chance and drive just a few miles up the coast to Tunnels Beach and see if it was any better. The whole island was overgrown due to a heavy rainy season, and the tall switchgrass leaned out over the road, giving the windy route a claustrophobic feeling. The rain didn't abate until we were about a half mile from the beach parking area. Everyone must have called it a day early because we had the beach practically to ourselves. I picked out a spot on the east side of the crescent beach to set up and watched as a beautiful sunset unfolded, while the encroaching storm pushed westward over the jungle and towards the peaks on the far side of the beach.

I shot this with a 6-stop ND filter to smooth out the choppy tide, which, combined with the golden light, created a dreamy beach paradise. What better way to spend an evening?
