Big Island, Hawaii
The Lonely One
A koa tree found in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Koa—meaning fearless or warrior in Hawaiian—is a cultural symbol of strength and has played a pivotal role in traditional island craftsmanship. Today koa is heavily protected and wood can only be harvested from dead trees on protected lands, making it one of the most expensive woods in the world.
