The Nā Pali Coast on Kauai, Hawaii, where the cliffs drop straight into the Pacific and the ridgelines run back into the island in a series of fluted green walls

Nā Pali Coast, Kauai, Hawaii

Jurassic Coast

The cliffs rose straight from the Pacific, so vast and jagged that my eyes could not take them in all at once.

From the boat, the Nā Pali Coast seemed to unspool endlessly along the island, plunging into the sea before folding inland into one impossibly green ridge after another. Early golden-hour light moved across the fluted walls, while heavy clouds gathered above and calm, seafoam-blue water stretched toward the horizon.

I made this as a 10-shot, 3:1 panorama because anything narrower felt like an interruption. I wanted the photograph to evoke the experience of standing on that boat and slowly turning your head, taking in one immense wall of Kauai after another. Weather, light, ocean, and cliffs converged in a scene that felt almost too expansive to contain within a single frame.
