The Rooster
I wasn't expecting much from Valley of the Gods the first time I visited. It was supposed to be a quick stop on the way to Monument Valley, but the landscape completely changed my plans. Towering buttes rose from the desert in every direction, and remarkably, there was hardly anyone around. We ended up stopping for a picnic lunch, then spent the afternoon driving around and between these enormous formations.
I launched the drone to get a different perspective, and from above, Rooster Butte really came to life. From the ground, it's easy to appreciate the scale of these formations; from the air, the landscape reveals patterns and shapes that aren't apparent from the road. For this photograph, I was particularly drawn to the way the road curves through the desert and leads the eye directly toward the butte.
What started as a quick stopover turned into one of those unexpected discoveries that make you want to slow down and explore.
