Ladder poles rising toward the roof opening inside Agate House, a pueblo built from petrified wood, Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

Rise Up

The Agate House is one of those places that feels like it shouldn't still be standing.

Built from chunks of petrified wood, the little structure has been left to weather away until almost nothing remains. Inside, I found myself in what was essentially a single dark room, with an opening in the roof above and an old ladder leading toward it. Only one rung remained. Everything else had disappeared into shadow.

I exposed the photograph so the walls fell almost completely into darkness, leaving the opening above glowing with light. Against that stark contrast, the ruined ladder became the only path out—the one fragile connection between the darkness below and the world beyond.
