Waterfall flowing between red desert sandstone of Utah

Gunlock State Park, Utah

Cracked and Split

Gunlock ran in April 2023 — a rare sight in southwest Utah, one that park records put at eight other times in the last thirty years. There are no trails out there, just a sandstone labyrinth with a visible line where most people walk. I followed it, shot the main falls from above and below, then started working away from the crowd, following the water.

After fifteen or twenty minutes exploring the area, I found this. The overflow had picked a seam in the sandstone and was working its way down through it in a run of short drops, water splitting around the ledges and coming back together below them. Evening, partly cloudy, the sun in and out, not quite into golden hour.
