Page, Arizona
Smoldering
One of the slot canyons outside Page, though I couldn't tell you which. Not Antelope.
Midday light was coming in over the rim and bouncing down the walls, and in color it was almost too much to believe. Saturated orange, glowing, the kind of scene that looks processed even when it isn't. I've seen enough of those. Near-monochrome, with a hint of warmth, was the way to keep it honest, and it turned out to be the stronger picture anyway.
Without color, what's left is form. The walls come down in long folded sheets, dark at the bottom left and building through every gray up to near-white where the light is landing along the top. The bedding lines run through all of it like grain in a piece of wood. That's why the title. It reads like something burning, or like fire caught mid-motion and set in stone, and the tonal range is what does it.
