Looking upwards in a colorful, narrow slot canyon of Arizona

Monument Sunrise

I’d like to tell you I found this myself. The guides have a set of compositions they show people and this is one of them, so credit where it’s due.

What I did bring to it was the light. The formation near the top of the frame reads as a Mitten from Monument Valley if you’re standing in the right place at the right hour, and at half past one that afternoon everything underneath it lined up: pinks and purples running across the wall where a sky would be, warm oranges and reds below standing in for ground, and a band of yellow sitting directly behind the Mitten itself. If I’d been able to order the lighting for that composition I wouldn’t have changed anything.

This is well before The Hallway, earlier in the canyon and earlier in the tour.

Two mittens, then, a couple of hundred miles apart and at wildly different scales — the other one is over in Monument Valley, and I’ve photographed that too (Persistence of Time).
