Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii
Miasma
Solidified pāhoehoe lava on the Big Island, its surface cooled into rope-like folds that read as fabric or hide long before they read as stone. Almost the whole frame sits in the bottom of the tonal range — black basalt gives back very little light, and the creases between the folds go to true black.
A companion piece to Nimbus, made a decade earlier on the opposite end of the same idea: undulating volume with no horizon and no scale to hold onto, one in near-white snow, one in near-black stone.
