Kona, Hawaii
Ebb and Flow
This photograph captures the sunset along the volcanic coastline of Kona, Hawaii, and represents the culmination of some planning and a lucky stroke of serendipity.
The location was discovered during an evening manta ray excursion in the same bay that my wife and I had taken on the previous night. Captivated by the rugged beauty of this particular stretch of shoreline, we made arrangements to stay at the nearby hotel, ensuring access to this prime spot for sunset.
As the golden hour approached, I cautiously made my way across the treacherous lava rock, each step a reminder of the volatile forces that shaped this landscape. Finding a suitable vantage point, I set up my gear for a long exposure shot and waited for the light to work its magic.
The scene that unfolded was a fantastic example of why I love landscape photography. It’s a culmination of planning, preparation, and some luck, just like life. Massive waves crashed against the cliffs with tremendous force, the impact resonating like explosions. Each collision sent plumes of water soaring up to 50 feet in the air, creating a dynamic interplay of motion and light.
Years of relentless pounding had sculpted the cliff face into a complex network of arches and blowholes. As waves surged through these openings, impromptu geysers erupted skyward, adding another layer of drama to the already dynamic scene.
Throughout the shoot, I was enveloped in a fine mist of sea spray, a small price to pay for witnessing this awe-inspiring display. The long exposure technique smoothed the churning sea just enough, contrasting beautifully with the jagged lava rock.
In the final image, you can see the water cascading back down the cliff face in numerous rivulets, catching the warm light of the setting sun. This interplay of water, light, and rock encapsulates the raw beauty and power of Hawaii's coastline.
