Akaka State Park waterfall in Hawaii near sunrise

Akaka Falls State Park, Hawaii

Four Hundred Forty-Two Feet

Akaka Falls is a beautiful state park north of Hilo. The trail to get there is a accessible loop and I love the reveal of the falls, especially on a foggy day. But it's hard to beat catching it in the early morning sun like I managed to here. The falls plunge 442 feet to a crater below. Surrounded by moss-covered stone and massive vegetation, the place feels distinctly Hawaiian.
