Katmai National Park, Alaska
Sunbather
For a day and a half it rained without stopping — no wind behind it, no gaps in it, just steady coastal Alaskan rain — and we spent almost all of it sitting in our tents.
When the sun finally got through, it came down on the sedge meadow and turned the whole thing gold, and we got out and went looking.
Down at the water we found our first close bear of the trip. It was fishing, working the shallows for salmon, and we watched it for a long time doing nothing else.
Once it had eaten its fill, it came up the bank at that unhurried bear pace, found a patch of sedge a short distance off, and lay down.
After giving it time to settle, we moved in a bit — still at a respectful distance, still far enough that nothing about us mattered to it. It was sprawled flat out in the grass with its eyes shut and its face turned up into the sun, the wind gusting through and lifting its coat, drying it out after a day and a half of being soaked through.
