Stormwarden

The others were moving on, but this one stopped.

I'd been watching the small band of wild horses work their way across the rocky ridge when one horse separated itself from the group—a striking black-and-white paint, standing alone against the sky. Behind it, the clouds were gathering, dark blue and heavy, stretching across the horizon. I knew I had only a few seconds before the horse moved on or the composition fell apart.

I raised the long lens and waited. The horse stood completely still, framed by the jagged rock beneath it and the storm building behind. I wanted the photograph to feel almost mythical, as if this horse belonged to the storm as much as the landscape. There was something powerful about its stillness—the sense that it wasn't watching the storm approach with fear, but simply standing there, as though it had seen a thousand storms before.
