A blonde-coated brown bear stands in the shallows at Katmai National Park, Alaska, river water still running off her fur

Katmai National Park, Alaska

Beauty Queen

A brown bear stood in profile in the river, water dripping from her chin as the low sunlight caught her coat. What looked brown from a distance revealed a remarkable range of warm tones up close—gold, copper, cinnamon, and deep chocolate, all shifting with the light.

I waited for the moment when she was completely still, letting the sunlight do the work. There was something almost regal about the way she stood there, dripping from the river and completely unconcerned with the audience watching her. Beauty Queen felt like the only appropriate name.
