Ribbons and Rays
For somewhere this dramatic the access is almost comically ordinary. It’s a pull-off on the side of the road with a railing, and I shot this pressed right up against it. The water arrives from a loch on the far side of the road, runs underneath it, gathers in a small pool and then goes straight over the edge into the sea.
We’d come from Dunvegan Castle that day, which is where Formidable was made, and stopped here on the way back to our B&B.
The rays in the title are real, if subtler than I’ve seen them elsewhere — sun coming through breaks in the cloud out over the water. The ribbon is the fall itself, which is what the five seconds are for; the sea was unusually calm that afternoon and didn’t need any help.
The green in the shallows at the base of the cliff is very nearly untouched. I did almost nothing to that colour, because that’s what it looked like.
