A Joshua tree silhouetted against the last color of the day

Joshua Tree National Natural Landmark

Alien Sunset

In a national natural landmark in southern Utah, I encountered an impressive, full-grown Joshua tree whose remarkable size made it a commanding presence in the desert landscape.

Just after sunset, I faced west and photographed it against the last colors of the sky. The tree became a silhouette, its spiny, otherworldly form rising sharply against the fading light. In that fleeting passage from day into night, it seemed to shed its familiar identity, becoming instead a strange, solitary presence from some distant world.
