Aspen trunks and summer foliage drawn into vertical streaks of white, green and gold by intentional camera movement, Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah

Cedar Breaks National Monument, Utah

Half-Remembered Dream

An aspen grove near Cedar Breaks in high summer, photographed with intentional camera movement — the camera drawn along the trunks during the exposure so the stand resolves into vertical bands of white bark and green light rather than individual trees.

The aim was interpretation rather than record: a painterly, impressionistic reading of a bucolic summer mountain landscape, made as the light was going. A thirtieth of a second at f/4 smears the detail while leaving the trunks still legible as trunks.
