Cloak and Dagger
A Blue Glow agave at Red Hills Desert Garden in St. George. It's one of my favorite varieties. Blue-green leaves with a thin red border and a gold edge inside it, and when the sun catches them from behind, the whole margin lights up.
I shot it wide open, with almost nothing in focus. Only a band across the middle of the leaves is sharp. The tips fall off, the interior of the rosette falls off, and what's left in focus is a two-tone surface that could be cold steel. That was the point. I wanted the plant to feel like a threat, the way something sharp does when it's held too close to your face to focus on.
Get close enough to admire it, and the arrangement reveals itself. A dozen blades, all of them turned toward you, every point tipped in blood red and lit from behind. There is no innocent way to read this plant. It is dressed for a beautiful evening and armed to the teeth.
