Isle of Skye, Scotland
Shrouded in Mist
I’d seen this view days earlier and hadn’t shot it. That morning I was up there for the tree, and once I’d committed to that frame I stayed committed to it — you don’t get many mornings on Skye and splitting your attention is how you come home with two mediocre photographs instead of one good one. But I’d looked north while I was waiting, and I filed it.
So on our last morning on the island, in September, I went back up specifically for it.
The whole place was shut in. Fog below us filling the lowlands, grey cloud above, and the ridge sitting in the thin layer between the two. From the top the fog reads as a slow river working through the landscape — you can’t see it move while you’re standing there, but pull the frames up side by side afterwards and it’s travelling.
The Quiraing is a strange piece of ground at the best of times; it’s the northern end of the Trotternish Ridge and the whole thing is a landslip, so nothing about the shapes quite behaves. In that light it went from strange to haunted, and that’s what I leaned into when I processed it.
