Empty Seats
At the end of a long day traveling back from Nikko toward Tokyo, I found these empty benches in a small train station. Evening light filtered through dirty windows, catching the worn seats and the quiet, empty space around them. After spending the day surrounded by forests, temples, and the reverent stillness of Nikko, the scene felt almost jarringly ordinary.
But I kept coming back to it. Maybe it was the loneliness of the city waiting on the other side of the window. Or maybe it was something simpler: these benches had spent years doing exactly what they were meant to do, holding tired travelers at the end of their days, without anyone ever really noticing them.
There was something beautiful in that quiet endurance. An ordinary object, doing its job, waiting for someone to come along.
