Hōzōmon, Sensō-ji, Tokyo, Japan
Celebration
Look at the middle lantern and you’ll find a hand reaching up to touch it. That’s the only person left in the frame, due to careful framing, timing, and a bit of luck as everything below and around that gate was packed shoulder to shoulder.
Spring, cherry blossoms at peak across Tokyo, and Sensō-ji had the frenetic energy of a festival going. People eating, drinking, queuing, paying their respects, more of them than almost anywhere else we went on that trip. It’s a wonderful thing to stand in the middle of. It’s also not where I’m happiest — I’ll take the quiet corners most days.
So I shot upward and tight. Dead-on for the symmetry the gate hands you if you stand in the right place, and cropped close enough that the crowd falls away below the frame and what’s left is the red lacquer, the gold, and the weight of that lantern hanging in the middle of it.
