Mount Hood reflected in Trillium Lake, Oregon

Trillium Lake, Mount Hood, Oregon

Sleeping Giant

Friends took us out here after an early morning hike, and somehow we had the place to ourselves. Trillium Lake isn't a place where that happens. Crisp autumn day, late morning, the water dead flat and the whole mountain sitting in it upside down.

The sky was an electric blue that would have taken over a color version of this shot. Black and white with a slight selenium grade holds the mood I remember instead: quiet. There's morning cloud still wrapped around Hood's lower slopes, dark conifers along the far shore, two rocks breaking the surface in the foreground.

It's a dormant volcano. That's the whole reason for the name. You stand there looking at something perfectly calm and reflected in still water, and in the back of your mind you know what it is and what it's capable of, and it puts you on your best behavior. Nobody talked much while we were there.
