San Juan Mountains, Colorado
Haymaker
I came across it while driving the county roads near Telluride—a freshly harvested hay field scattered with enormous round bales, surrounded by aspens and pines, with the San Juan Mountains rising behind it. A small tractor shed sat at the edge of the field, almost easy to miss among all the details.
I processed the scene in monochrome to simplify the landscape and let the hay bales become the dominant shapes across the field. But there was another detail I couldn't ignore: a storm was gathering over the mountains. Suddenly, the scene felt less like a quiet pastoral landscape and more like a race against the weather. All those bales were waiting to be brought in before the rain arrived.
