Aspens turning near Cedar City, Utah, their trunks cutting a zigzag through the fall color

Cedar City, Utah

Zigzag

This photo is a near-perfect representation of the perfect way to spend an autumn day. Taken on the edge of a circuitous ranch road, high in the mountains of southern Utah during peak Aspen color. I love the zig-zag fence and the cattle-manicured field of aspens receding into the distance.

In my experience, red-leafed aspens are a rarity — they're almost always gold, so I always consider it lucky when I find a patch. A few miles down the road, we happened to be in the right place at the right time to help a rancher round up a stray cow that was going for an evening jog up the road. Lucky!
