Good light rarely lasts, and that’s doubly so when you’re in a canyon. The sun came down onto the ridgeline at the mouth of the canyon, threw everything gold, and then it was behind the rock and the day was over.
I hadn’t planned to stop. I was driving out of the canyon on the way home from a hike and the light got too good to keep driving through, so I pulled into the lot and shot the rabbitbrush that grows right beside it. I wanted the sunstar before the sun cleared the ridge, and there wasn’t time to think about much else.
The square crop exists to get the parking lot out of the frame.
Chamisa — rubber rabbitbrush — is everywhere in northern Utah and eleven months of the year you drive straight past it without registering it. Then autumn arrives, it turns, and in the right few minutes of the right evening it goes gold and orange and looks like something on fire.
