McClure Pass in Colorado with autumn aspens and evening sun

Carbondale, Colorado

Dawn Breaking

First light does the tops first. For a few minutes at McClure Pass the peaks are lit and everything under them — the whole slope, the valley, the aspens you actually came for — is still sitting in cold blue shadow, and then the line comes down and it’s over.

We left the hotel at half past six to be up there for it. End of September 2018, based in Crested Butte, and we’d hit it at absolute peak: the aspens fully turned, no green left holding out, none of it gone over yet. That window is about a week wide and it moves every year.

Just the two of us up there. Nobody else stopped.
