Cross-bedded sandstone at Vermilion Cliffs, Arizona — the frozen record of ancient dunes, turned on edge and eroded back open

Vermilion Cliffs, Arizona

Twirled

I sent the drone straight up and looked down on a landscape where ribbons of orange and white sandstone twisted together in intricate patterns. The formations looked less like solid rock and more like someone had taken a brush to wet paint, swirling the colors together before they could set.

The top-down perspective stripped away any sense of scale or orientation. Without knowing what I was looking at, it could have been paint, marble, or some strange surface from another world. Twirled felt like the right name for a landscape that looks as though the earth itself was stirred together.
