A raptor pushing off into flight near Ogden, Utah

Ogden, Utah

Lift Off

A bald eagle takes flight from an autumn field during golden hour, just after sunrise. In January and February, migrating eagles arrive in large numbers in northern Utah. They are especially attracted to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, where prey birds are abundant throughout the winter. A road loops through the refuge, and you can usually spot tons of interesting birds, including raptors, if you take your time and keep a watchful eye.
