Kanab, Utah
Hidden Within
Deep inside a decommissioned salt mine in southern Utah, I found myself looking back toward a small opening where the outside world was visible again. The warm sandstone had been carved away over time—first by the miners who worked here, and later by people who left their own marks on the walls. What remained felt more like a natural catacomb than a mine.
Inside, the light behaved differently. Warm sunlight from the opening bounced off the orange walls and coral-colored sand, carrying surprisingly far into the darkness. I was drawn to the contrast between the narrow opening and the glow it created throughout the chamber, as if the landscape outside was still reaching into a place that had long been abandoned.
