Sandstone walls of The Narrows converging above the Virgin River in Zion National Park

The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah

Collision Course

The Narrows is the slot section of Zion Canyon where the Virgin River becomes the trail — the walls close to a few dozen feet apart and rise hundreds of feet overhead, and the only way through is upstream in the water.

Light down here is entirely secondhand: it strikes the upper walls and bounces down, which is why the sandstone glows warm above and cools toward the river. Thirteen seconds at f/8, ISO 64, to smooth the current into a single sheet and hold the grain of the rock on both walls.
