A sea stack off the Olympic National Park coast in Washington, mirrored in the wet sand at low tide

Olympic National Park, Washington

Breath of the Wild

While backpacking along the rugged coast of Olympic National Park, I came across this small rock rising sharply from the Pacific. It was little more than a jagged tower of stone, battered by waves and weather, yet somehow a handful of pine trees had managed to take root at the top. From where I stood, it looked less like a real place and more like something designed for a video game—an isolated little world suspended above the sea.

It immediately reminded me of Breath of the Wild: those strange, improbable landscapes where you round a corner and discover some tiny island or cliff that seems to have been placed there just to make you wonder how you could possibly get there. I stopped to photograph it because I wanted to capture that same sense of discovery—the feeling of stumbling across a place that feels almost too fantastical to be real.

Standing there on the coast, with the ocean stretching endlessly around it, I kept wondering what it would be like to climb up there and see what had managed to survive. I never found out. Somehow, that made the little island even more compelling.
