Overhead shot of limestone quarry with green water, Southern Ohio

Southern Ohio

Limestone Abyss

I nearly put the drone into a set of power lines. They’re almost impossible to see from above against that ground, and after that first pass I took it up and kept it there — somewhere around two to three hundred feet for the rest of the flight, high enough that nothing on the ground could reach me.

This is a decommissioned limestone quarry near where I grew up. Mining was ordinary in that part of Ohio; what’s left behind is not. Forty-foot walls in places, sand along one edge, and water so clear and so green it looks imported from somewhere with a coastline. From directly overhead, sitting in a landscape of corn, soybeans and forests, it reads as something that shouldn’t be there at all.

It’s private land. I was flying with permission — a friend worked for the company that owned it, and that permission covered exactly one day and exactly the drone. I’ve kept the location out of this deliberately for that reason.

The whole thing was one flight.

All Good Things is the other Ohio frame on this site — a small park in the Cincinnati years, rather than this home ground.
