Saguaro National Park, Arizona
Entmoot
Saguaro at sunset, a hillside of them standing over the valley floor with the mountains beyond fading to silhouette. Some raise two or three arms at once. Backlit and still and at that distance, they stop reading as plants. They read as a gathering, old and slow and taller than anything else around, arranged like they've been standing there discussing something for a long time.
Tolkien's Ents held a council called an Entmoot, which is where the name comes from. Tree-shepherds meeting to decide what to do, taking days to decide because that's the pace of things that live for centuries. Saguaro run on that same clock. This one takes a hundred years to put out its first arm.
