Arches National Park, Utah
Worn Away
After hiking for more than 40 minutes, I finally saw Delicate Arch—and it wasn't what I expected.
The famous 50-foot arch perched on the rim of an enormous, scooped-out bowl, almost like an oblong amphitheater carved into the desert. With nothing around it to provide context, the formation felt strangely improbable. I couldn't stop wondering what combination of wind, water, and time could have worn the landscape into something so specific.
For hours, people crowded beneath the arch, waiting their turn for the obligatory photograph. But eventually, the crowds thinned. I stayed. As the sun disappeared and golden hour gave way to blue hour, the sandstone softened from fiery orange into coral pink, and the whole scene became quieter and more contemplative.
I'm glad I waited. The photograph I wanted wasn't the one everyone had come to take. It was the one that appeared after everyone else had left.
