Pale Palace

Deep in Petrified Forest National Park, I came across a bank of pale clay carved into delicate layers by erosion. There was almost no obvious color in the scene—just soft whites and grays, with faint traces of pink, purple, and orange appearing in the clay. The closer I looked, the more I could see: tiny ridges, channels, and folds tracing across the surface like the architecture of some impossibly delicate palace.

I wanted to photograph it without letting the landscape become too literal. By keeping the exposure high and allowing the scene to become almost monochromatic, the subtle mineral colors remained as little whispers rather than defining features. The erosion lines became the real subject—the texture and contours giving the otherwise empty surface a sense of depth and movement.

The result felt less like a photograph of earth and more like a study of something fragile and otherworldly—a palace carved not by architects, but by water, wind, and time.
