Swirled and cracked sandstone at Vermilion Cliffs, Arizona, where a run of orange rock meets a field of white brain-rock texture

Vermilion Cliffs, Arizona

Dragon's Eye

The composition split almost perfectly in two: strange, scale-like white “brain rock” on one side, and ribbons of orange and white sandstone twisting together on the other. Then I noticed the small pool of rainwater sitting in the middle of the white rock. From the drone, it looked uncannily like an enormous eye staring straight back at me.

Suddenly, the landscape felt like something ancient and dormant beneath the desert. The swirling sandstone became frozen flames, the pool its eye, and I couldn't help but imagine that I was looking down on a dragon that had been sleeping there for thousands of years.
