Searching
I set my tripod just above the waterline. The bear did the same, his head breaking the surface, water streaming from his nose and chin. He looked directly into the lens. Sunlight caught one side of his face while the other fell into shadow; beyond his eyes, the narrow depth of field dissolved everything into softness.
I processed the image in black and white and added a heavy vignette, stripping away everything nonessential. The frame draws toward those eyes. I wanted it to feel less like a wildlife snapshot than an encounter—two creatures quietly sizing each other up across the river.
I called it Searching because I don't know what he was looking for. Perhaps the water, the current, the world beyond me. But watching him, I felt my attention turn inward. Across that narrow, trembling distance, we seemed to be searching for the same thing: recognition, an answer in the other's gaze.
